Ahhhhh, the 5 second rule.
Do you believe in the rule? No doubt you’ve heard it “said” many times, but how many times have you actually followed through with it?
The picture above is actually from Wikipedia. Yeah, that’s right, the 5 second rule actually has its own page on the website.
Perhaps it matters ‘what’ you drop on the floor. If it’s something moist like jello or yogurt you might not pick it up anyway. If it’s something crispy like toast or chips – maybe you’re more inclined to go for it and use the 5 second rule.
These people believe whole-heartedly in the rule…
But is it fact or fiction?
Well according to new research it is indeed – a myth.
Researchers say that the germs are fast and don’t need much longer than a few seconds to latch on.
They tested the 5 second rule on carrots and what they found was the carrots were laced with germs in under five seconds.
Of note, while the 5 second rule usually relates to food falling on the floor – the filthiest surface in your kitchen is NOT the floor – but the countertop.
